Oil on board

A vibrant mid-century modern landscape depicting a village nestled between two towering mountains beneath a luminous midday sun, executed in oil onto board and dated 1949.

The composition simplifies the natural world into bold, interlocking forms, balancing geometric architecture with broad, sculptural hills to create a scene that feels both recognisable and dreamlike.

Painted in an expressive modernist style, the work embraces flat planes of colour and stylised shapes rather than naturalistic detail. The village is rendered as a lively mosaic of simplified buildings, while the surrounding mountains are distilled into sweeping, abstracted masses that frame the composition with dramatic presence.

The palette is rich and energetic, combining turquoise skies, glowing chartreuse, earthy olive greens, burnt oranges and deep crimson accents. Strong contrasts between cool and warm tones create a striking sense of sunlight and atmosphere, while dark passages anchor the composition and add visual depth.

Confident, painterly brushstrokes alternate with textured marks that enliven the mountain slopes and architectural forms. Areas of smooth blended colour sit alongside more gestural passages, allowing the surface to retain a sense of movement and spontaneity. The result is a bold, joyful composition that captures the warmth and vitality of the landscape through colour, rhythm and expressive design.

This oil on board is presented in a wood frame with a warm gilt outer edge, silver-toned inner moulding and deep green liner, complementing the painting’s vibrant palette. The painting is in excellent vintage condition overall, and the frame has minor scuffs.
