Oil on board

A captivating mid-century modernist painting that depicts an imagined interior filled with paintings, framed works, and decorative forms arranged within a richly abstracted room, executed in oil onto board.

The composition feels like an artist’s studio or collector’s salon, where artworks lean against walls and hang in layered succession, creating a maze of colour, shape, and visual conversation.

Painted in a bold abstract-modernist style, the work reduces the interior into interlocking geometric forms and flattened planes of colour. Architectural structure and decorative detail merge together, giving the scene an almost dreamlike spatial quality while still clearly suggesting walls, frames, canvases, and displayed artworks.

The palette is vibrant and expressive, dominated by vivid sky blues and warm burnt oranges, balanced with soft cream, deep black, plum purple, olive green, and flashes of yellow. These contrasting tones create both warmth and movement throughout the composition, while the lighter central forms draw the eye inward like illuminated canvases within the room.

The brushwork is energetic and textural, with layered matte paint, gestural outlines, and visible directional strokes adding depth and rhythm to the surface. Loose scratch-like marks and painterly edges give the work a lively, spontaneous quality.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary wood frame with a white inner border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and there are some marks to inner white frame.
