A remarkable antique Andean child’s handwoven wool poncho, preserved today as a compelling example of traditional textile craftsmanship and folk art.
Smaller in scale than an adult poncho, this piece was traditionally made for a child and features an exceptionally rich handwoven composition of repeating geometric motifs, vertical bands, diamond forms, and intricate linear patterns in beautifully aged shades of rust, terracotta, burnt orange, brown, black, and natural wool tones.
The textile has a wonderfully substantial and tactile surface. Close examination reveals the complexity of the weaving and the unmistakable irregularities of work produced by hand rather than by modern mechanical manufacturing. Its aged fibers, softened coloration, areas of wear, old repairs, and variations throughout give the piece extraordinary visual depth and character.
The exact date and origin have not been independently authenticated or documented. Based on its traditional construction and aged appearance, the piece is believed to be of considerable age and potentially over 100 years old; however, this dating should be regarded as an attribution rather than a certified age.
Originally created as a child’s poncho, today this textile is particularly compelling as a collectible decorative object. It could be professionally mounted and framed behind conservation-grade glass or acrylic, allowing its geometric composition, aged surface, and handmade construction to be appreciated as textile art while helping protect the historic fibers.
Rather than diminishing its appeal, the visible passage of time has become part of the textile itself. The wear, repairs, softened fibers, and irregularities document a long life of use and preservation and give the piece the authenticity and character sought in genuinely old handmade textiles.
A one-of-a-kind Andean textile with exceptional patina, craftsmanship, and presence—equally compelling as folk art, a collector’s textile, or a dramatic framed wall piece.

The overall structure, geometric woven patterns, and rich earthy coloration remain clearly visible and visually striking. As shown in the photographs, the textile exhibits age-related wear, areas of fiber loss and thinning, small openings, worn sections, old repairs, and irregularities in the weave, particularly along portions of the central construction and other localized areas. The edges and fringe also show natural wear consistent with an extensively aged, handmade textile. These imperfections have not been concealed or restored and are an important part of the piece's history, patina, and authentic character. Despite the areas of deterioration, the textile retains a strong overall visual presence and remains especially compelling as a collectible decorative textile or professionally mounted and framed piece of folk art. The exact age has not been independently authenticated. Please review all detailed photographs carefully, as they are considered an important part of the condition description less
