Antique Quarter-Sawn Oak Beveled Glass Display Cabinet, circa 1900–1915
Impressive antique quarter-sawn oak double-door display cabinet, dating to approximately 1900–1915. Crafted in beautifully figured oak, commonly referred to as tiger oak, the cabinet combines Late Victorian and Arts & Crafts influences with substantial turn-of-the-century craftsmanship.
The cabinet is crowned by a wide projecting cornice with deeply carved acanthus and foliate decoration. Highly figured quarter-sawn oak throughout displays the distinctive ray and flame grain prized in period tiger-oak furniture.
Two tall glazed doors feature a striking geometric divided-light design with large octagonal beveled-glass panels. The beveled edges catch and reflect light beautifully, giving the cabinet exceptional architectural presence.
The spacious wood-lined interior is currently fitted with four adjustable glass shelves supported by traditional notched wooden shelf standards. Additional wooden shelf-support brackets are included, allowing the new owner to add additional glass shelves if desired. This provides considerable flexibility for displaying pieces of varying heights.
Interior display lighting was added at a later date, beautifully illuminating the cabinet and its contents. It is particularly well suited for displaying china, crystal, art glass, collectibles, books or decorative objects.
The cabinet retains what appears to be much of its period/original interior and door hardware, including the decorative metal backplates, hinges, keyhole hardware and wooden shelf-support system. The two round exterior door knobs appear to be later replacements and are noted for accuracy.
Paneled oak sides, molded lower panels, substantial frame-and-panel construction and a molded plinth base complete this handsome cabinet.
