The cobalt decoration is particularly appealing for its subtle tonal variation, ranging from deep, inky blue to softer blue washes.
The central basket overflows with flowers and is tied with trailing ribbons. A large butterfly rests on top of the basket, joined by two smaller insects—a charming naturalistic detail that brings the composition to life. The central motif is framed by a repeating geometric band and an elaborate border of flowers, foliage and butterflies, balancing the composition.
Made in China for the Western market during the Qing Dynasty, the platter reflects the combination of Chinese craftsmanship and European taste characteristic of Chinese Export porcelain of the period.
Measuring 12 3/4 inches wide, the platter has enough presence to display on its own while also working beautifully as part of a collection of antique Chinese blue and white porcelain, on a plate wall, or as a decorative tabletop piece.
