This charming three-legged Welsh-style spinning chair is a beautiful example of mid-to-late 20th-century British folk craft.
Hand-carved at the renowned Studio of Art & Antiquity in Torbay, Devon, this piece faithfully captures the historic silhouette and rustic romance of traditional cottage furniture, with it's total height of 93 cm it is a versatile decorative chair for corner and small spaces.
The chair features a strikingly tall, narrow backrest with a stylized Gothic or obelisk silhouette, designed historically to give a spinner’s arms total freedom of movement.
The spine and the circular seat are deeply hand-carved with flowing floral and botanical motifs, framed by classic geometric chip-carving along the borders. It rests on three turned legs, a traditional tripod design meant to ensure stability on uneven rustic floors. The backrest is securely joined through the seat and anchored with prominent wooden pegs at the base.
Finished in a rich, dark ebonized stain that beautifully highlights the carved details, this highly sculptural piece makes for a perfect decorative accent, hallway statement, or unique plant stand in a contemporary or country-style interior.
