This magnificent, masterfully restored writing desk and matching chair suite is a rare expression of the Viennese Avant-Garde and the Vienna Secession around 1905.
Crafted from solid oak, both pieces feature a striking blue-stained and white-washed (limed) finish that beautifully reveals the natural, deeply grained character of the wood. The desk is distinguished by its clean, geometric architectural lines and refined brass detailing, including exquisite original brass-beaded trim (Messing-Perlstäbe) framing the drawer fronts.
The desk comprises three drawers, each fitted with substantial circular solid-brass escutcheons. Its reverse is fully finished, allowing the piece to be presented freely within a room rather than positioned against a wall.
The accompanying chair features a tall, elegant backrest with vertical slats and has been newly upholstered in an iconic woven textile by the legendary Viennese manufacturer Backhausen. Its bold red-and-black geometric grid pattern strongly reflects the radical decorative language of the Viennese modernist movement and the designs associated with Josef Hoffmann and the inner circle of the Wiener Werkstätte.
Historical Craftsmanship & Hallmarks
The suite represents an authentic example of early 20th-century k.u.k. master cabinetry. Particular attention is evident in the traditional construction of the drawers, which feature hand-dovetailed joints displaying the subtle irregularities characteristic of individual artisan craftsmanship.
The drawers are complemented by their original Breveté solid-brass locks, adding an important period detail to the sophisticated architectural design.
The combination of richly grained oak, restrained geometric form, brass detailing and graphic textile creates an exceptionally distinctive ensemble characteristic of the progressive design culture of Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century.
