An exceptionally elegant Italian single bed attributed to Gio Ponti and produced by Italbed, a manufacturer with which Ponti collaborated, dating from the 1950s and newly reinterpreted by FORME as a sophisticated daybed. The beautifully crafted cherrywood frame displays a warm, luminous grain and the distinctive lightness associated with postwar Italian design. Its slender, gently splayed legs rise seamlessly into the two end panels, creating a refined and highly architectural silhouette. Particularly striking are the sculptural openwork elements within the headboard and footboard. Their elongated, softly tapered profiles introduce a subtle decorative rhythm while preserving the visual transparency and lightness of the structure. Originally conceived as a conventional single bed with metal springs, the piece has been carefully adapted by FORME for contemporary use. The old springs have been replaced with a sturdy multilayer wooden platform, providing greater stability, solidity and consistent support.
A new custom-made mattress, measuring 18 cm in height and 190 cm in length, has been added. It is upholstered in an exceptionally high-quality cream-colored, off-white fabric made from 100% organic cotton. The upholstery is completely removable and washable. Its carefully calibrated firmness provides excellent comfort while maintaining the daybed’s clean and tailored appearance. This version is completed by a single, generously padded cylindrical bolster cushion extending across the entire length of the mattress. Measuring 190 cm in length and 25 cm in diameter, the cushion transforms the piece into an exceptionally comfortable sofa or lounging bed when placed against a wall. The long bolster is upholstered in the same high-quality 100% organic cotton fabric and is also fully removable and washable. The contrast between the warm cherrywood structure and the understated off-white upholstery gives the piece a timeless and highly versatile character. It is ideal for a living room, guest room, study, dressing room or spacious entrance hall, functioning equally well as comfortable seating or as an occasional bed. This listing refers to the version supplied with one full-length cylindrical bolster cushion. Condition The cherrywood structure has been professionally restored and is in excellent vintage condition, retaining only minor traces consistent with age and previous use. The 18 cm-high mattress, multilayer wooden support and full-length bolster cushion are newly made. The upholstery is crafted from high-quality 100% organic cotton in a cream-colored, off-white tone and is fully removable and washable.
