The set is a fine example of Danish modernist furniture art, where high quality craftsmanship, well-thought-out function and a sculptural design language are combined.

Erling Torvits was active during the international breakthrough of Danish design in the 1950s and 60s. For Heltborg Møbler he designed several models of side tables, especially in teak and rosewood. His furniture is often characterized by elegant proportions and well-crafted carpentry details, where the construction is allowed to be a visible part of the design. Several surviving side tables are stamped by Heltborg Møbler, and documented examples exist from both the 1950s and 60s.

This side table consists of three tables in different sizes. The two smaller tables are pushed under the largest and run on guides under the table top. The construction means that the tables are held together when not in use and that the entire set only takes up the floor space of the largest table. When additional storage space is needed, the smaller tables are quickly and easily pulled out.

Particularly distinctive are the sculpturally shaped legs and the carefully executed joints. The organic lines of the legs give the otherwise stripped-down piece of furniture a strong architectural expression and are a fine example of the wealth of detail that made Danish furniture design from the period internationally renowned.

A piece of furniture from the Danish Modern era that is both practical and decorative, with a design language that works equally well in a contemporary interior as it does with other Scandinavian design classics.
