Description

A striking large-scale vintage landscape painting by Lee Reynolds for Vanguard Studios, depicting a serene moonlit waterscape with softly silhouetted trees, reeds, reflective water, and a tranquil atmospheric palette.

Measuring an impressive 60 inches wide by 48 inches high, this substantial artwork makes a dramatic statement while maintaining a sophisticated, understated color palette of soft ivory, taupe, sage, blue-gray, and muted blush tones.

The composition centers on a beautifully textured landscape with a luminous moon, layered trees, tall grasses, and their reflections across the calm water. Particularly appealing is the dimensional, heavily textured surface, with raised texturing throughout the trees, foliage, grasses, sky, and water that gives the artwork remarkable depth and visual interest.

The painting is signed “Lee Reynolds” at lower right and retains markings on the reverse consistent with its Vanguard Studios production. The back features a visible Vanguard Studios factory stamp on the wooden stretcher support as well as the handwritten production number.

Lee Reynolds & Vanguard Studios

Lee Reynolds works are closely associated with Vanguard Studios, the Beverly Hills-based commercial art studio known for producing large-scale decorative paintings during the mid-20th century. Vanguard Studios made sophisticated, highly textured artwork accessible for residential interiors through a commercial studio-production model.

This piece exemplifies the atmospheric landscape style associated with vintage Lee Reynolds/Vanguard Studios artwork, combining an elegant decorative composition with substantial three-dimensional surface texture.

Exceptional Texture & Detail

The artwork’s greatest visual feature is its pronounced dimensional texture. The central tree, surrounding foliage, reeds, clouds, and portions of the water are built up with thick, tactile applications that create a subtle relief effect across the canvas.

The texture becomes particularly apparent when viewed from an angle, where the raised surface catches ambient light and creates shifting highlights and shadows. This gives the otherwise soft and muted composition a wonderful sense of depth.

Original Vintage Presentation

The painting is presented in a slim black frame that provides a clean, contemporary contrast to the softly colored landscape. The understated frame allows the expansive 60-inch-wide composition and textured surface to remain the focus.

The reverse retains its original-style wooden stretcher construction, diagonal support brace, hanging wire, Vanguard Studios marking, and handwritten number identifier.
