The … Read more A finely decorated Japanese Imari porcelain shallow bowl dating to the late Meiji to early Taishō period, circa 1900–1920.

The interior is arranged in an elaborate radial composition of alternating cartouches filled with flowering plants, birds and garden motifs, executed in the classic Imari palette of deep underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, soft green and pale blue enamels with extensive gilt detailing. A central floral medallion provides a quieter counterpoint to the densely patterned surrounding panels.

The exterior is equally considered, with a continuous border of stylized blossoms and scrolling gilt ornament against alternating iron-red and cobalt grounds. A gilt line finishes the raised rim.

The underside is finely finished with concentric cobalt rings surrounding a hand-painted four-character gold overglaze seal mark. The mark remains untranslated and is presented as photographed rather than attributed to a particular workshop.

Subtle concentric turning rings, along with slight variations in glaze thickness and pooling, are visible on close inspection and are consistent with the handmade and kiln-fired character of the porcelain.

The combination of finely controlled enameling, extensive gilding, fully decorated exterior and marked base gives this piece considerably more presence than typical later decorative Imari ware.

Approximately 7.5" diameter x 1.5" high.

Condition
Very good antique condition with minor surface and gilt wear consistent with age. No chips, cracks or repairs observed. Handmade, glazing and firing irregularities are inherent to the piece. Please review photographs closely for condition and detail. See less
