This object here is a miniature version of the altar coffer. It is in the original found condition with worn wood and black and red lacquer finish. The long table top ends in everted flanges. The recessed body has a compartment which is opened on the side. The paneled coffer is decorated with fancy carved spandrels on the sides and supported by heavy cabriole legs that have little block feet. Red is the color of the cloud scroll shaped apron which adds interest. The apron on the back is less elaborate. The finish is original, with fading colors and lacquer but protected by a coat of varnish.

On our buying trips to China, my late husband would search for large cabinets and altar tables while my attention would be drawn to smaller interesting pieces. This is one of my better finds which I have kept out of inventory until now. See less
