A distinctive pair of vintage West African style lost-wax brass elephant sculptures, each rendered with an elongated trunk, slender legs, arched body, incised geometric decoration and dramatic spiral-disc ears and crest.
Each stylized elephant is formed with a dramatically arched body embellished with chevron and linear decoration. The expressive faces feature elongated trunks framed by prominent spiral discs, giving the figures their distinctive sculptural character. Subtle variations between the two figures are consistent with individually cast and finished pieces and add to the character of the pair.
The brass has developed a warm golden-brown patina with darker oxidation settled into the recessed decoration, emphasizing the intricate surface work. At approximately 8 inches long and 6 inches high each, the pair has enough scale to make an interesting statement without requiring much display space.
Wonderful together on a console, bookcase or cocktail table, these work particularly well in a collected interior alongside African art, antique textiles, contemporary ceramics and other artisan-made objects.
Sold as a pair.
COLLECTOR"S NOTE
The lost-wax, or cire perdue, method creates an individual mold for each casting, allowing the maker to produce complex sculptural forms and hand-worked surface decoration. These figures reflect the visual vocabulary associated with West African brass traditions; absent documented provenance, we describe them as Dogon style rather than attributing them to a specific people or workshop.
