Printed by Stone Press in Seattle, Washington (from blind stamp)
A color lithograph over intaglio ground with hand-painted embellishments.
Seattle-based artist Dale Chihuly first studied at the University of Washington, Seattle, receiving his Bachelor’s in 1965 and, in 1967, earning his Master’s from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He furthered his education at the Rhode Island School of Design where he was awarded a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant for work in glass.
Chihuly began teaching in 1967 at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Maine. The following year, at age 28, he received his MFA from RISD and established their glass program, where he would teach until 1980. At this time, Chihuly was also invited to work in the prestigious Venini factory on the island of Murano. In 1971, he co-founded Pilchuck Glass School and, in 1975 and 1979, was the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Chihuly has exhibited widely and with success since 1967 including at the Whitney Museum, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Rockefeller Center, Seattle Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Sydney Arts Festival, Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, as well as in Singapore and Venice among others. Dale Chihuly’s work can be found in the permanent collections of more than 200 museums around the world and Seattle, Washington, homes the Chihuly Glass Garden and Museum.
From the artist's website:
Lithograph prints are created by Chihuly in different ways, including by drawing with tusche (a grease-like ink) onto stone or metal plates or by painting on sheets of Mylar. One plate is needed for each color desired in the final artwork. For example, a six-color lithograph requires six unique plates. After further preparation by the master printmaker, the plates are inked and hand-pulled through the press using archival paper, with one pass required for each plate. Thus, a six-color lithograph is run through the press six separate times. Lithographs with handwork are created by drawing with paint onto existing lithographs after they are pulled from the press.
Intaglio prints are created in many different ways, including “biting” (with acid), cutting, or incising (carving) into a metal plate to transfer Chihuly’s drawing to it, using techniques with names such as aquatint, spit bite, white ground, and sugar lift. After further preparation by the master printmaker, the plates are inked and then pulled through the press, transferring the drawing to archival paper. Often various platemaking methods are combined in one composition, creating prints that are both ambitious and complex.
