Deagan, Inc. of Chicago, also identified in period catalogs as Liberty Chimes. Five tuned steel bars are arranged in a compact square formation above a substantial stepped hardwood base and secured beneath blackened metal retainers. The set retains its felt-tipped handheld striker, producing a bright, resonant sequence when the individual bars are sounded. A worn orange Deagan patent label remains on the underside and lists numerous United States and foreign patent dates associated with the company's tuned percussion designs. J.C. Deagan was a pioneering American percussion manufacturer whose chimes, tuned bars, bells, and orchestral instruments were widely used in railroads, schools, military facilities, and musical institutions.
