Irene Miller Stein (1894-2000) was a highly versatile professional artist based in Colorado who remained active and created art well into her 90s. Over her long career, she evolved through various artistic styles, moving from Art Deco paintings in the 1920s and 1930s to modern abstract sculptures in glass and metal, computer-generated art, and complex limited-edition printmaking in the 1970s and 1980s. Her work is included in several public and museum collections, including the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Butler Institute of American Art.
She attended the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1921 she married Azriel Stein, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1896 and moved to Denver with his family at the age of 14. Azriel ”Azie” Stein, and his brother-in-law Joe Peterman (Sophie Miller’s husband), founded, owned, and operated Pencol Drug Store on the corner of Pennsylvania Street and Colfax Avenue in Denver. Irene and Azriel’s son Stanley was born in 1928. Azriel Stein died in 1976.
In addition to images of the serigraph, we have included a photo of Ms. Stein welding at age 84.

This piece is framed in a lacquered solid wood frame and created in the most fascinating technique. The work is actually printed in reverse onto the plexiglass, backed with paper and signed on the linen mat by Ms. Stein lower right and titled lower left. En verso, it is indicated that the piece is one of four ever hand-created, a very small edition.
