Inspired by Parrish’s 1904 “Air Castles,” the composition is a timeless allegory for dreaming, imagination and youthful aspiration. This 1986 painting signed by H. Nady faithfully recreates the layout and core iconography of Parrish's masterpiece, which was originally created as an illustration and widely distributed as an Art Nouveau-framed print across mid-century American homes.

COMPOSITION: Floating high in the sky within translucent, iridescent bubbles, the literal "castles in the air" represent unattainable ideals, fantasies and daydreams. The young, draped figure sitting on a cliffside overlooks a vast sea, completely engrossed in gazing upward at his creations. He holds in his hand a traditional bubble-blowing pipe he has just used, actively blowing these shimmering fragile worlds into existence.

ARTIST: While not a widely recognized historical figure in mainstream art markets, Nady was a talented regional or hobbyist painter who possessed significant skill in handling large canvases, perspective and form. At 48 inches high by 35.5 inches wide (unframed), this is an exceptionally large scale for this image. Most original commercial prints of Parrish's Air Castles were typically around 14 inches by 11 inches. Experiencing these intimate, soft illustrations scaled up to a massive statement piece completely changes its impact in a room.

VARIATIONS: Nady brought their own stylistic voice to the piece. Compared to Parrish’s signature "Parrish blue" and ultra-smooth, glowing glazes, Nady's 1986 version leans into deeper, contrast-heavy shadows, more graphic linework on the tree branches and distinct, stylized dark hair on the boy rather than soft, golden-brown curls. The back of the canvas shows standard late-20th-century heavy stretcher bars, a tight wire mount and clean linen consistent with a well-preserved oil or acrylic work from the 1980s. It stands as a beautiful, grand celebration of a golden-age masterwork. And don’t we all know a beloved dreamer or two to share this with?
