Dating to the late Victorian era (circa 1880), this imposing piece was originally designed for institutional use—likely as a church choir, sacristy, or commercial clerk's station—making it a incredibly unique statement piece for a modern interior. The desk features two independent, beautifully grained slant-top writing surfaces with integrated book rests to prevent papers from sliding. Each lid lifts on original brass hinges to reveal spacious interior storage wells. Flanking the top of each station are original, recessed brass sliding panels that elegantly slide back to reveal hidden pen and inkwell compartments.Architectural and decorative details abound, highlighted by the pierced side trestle supports featuring beautifully carved quatrefoil cutouts. The desk is raised on robust, deeply turned spindle legs joined by a sturdy H-stretcher, combining ecclesiastical gravitas with exceptional stability. The quarter-sawn oak boasts a phenomenal, authentic tiger-oak flake pattern across the tops and sides, highlighted by a rich, warm honey-brown patina. There are carved markings scratched into the front wooden panel below the slope (pictured). No doubt, left by a daydreaming student wanting to leave their mark for future generations to discover.
