Wonderfully graphic and richly hand-colored, this 1828 toucan engraving pairs a Red-bellied Toucan and Toco Toucan against a clean, spare ground. Saturated crimson, yellow, black, and warm brown give the birds exceptional presence, while the fine linework and original French captions preserve the elegance of early nineteenth-century natural-history illustration.
From Buffon’s Oeuvres complètes, with illustrations by French natural-history artist Antoine-Charles Vauthier (1790–1879), this is an especially handsome example of period ornithological printmaking.
