A wonderfully distinctive Italian mid-century drinks trolley, attributed to the 1960s, handcrafted in dark-stained bamboo and rattan with a genuine hand-painted ceramic tile serving top.
Four individual glazed ceramic tiles meet to create a continuous geometric composition, pairing stylized floral medallions with architectural borders in warm cream, ochre, burnt orange, olive, plum, and brown. The richly colored tilework gives this compact trolley considerably more decorative presence than the glass- or laminate-topped examples more commonly encountered.
Its thoughtfully designed frame incorporates an integrated three-bottle rack: three circular openings secure the bottle necks while corresponding curved rattan cradles support the bodies below. A generous slatted lower shelf provides additional room for glassware, cocktail accessories, linens, or serving pieces.
The long bent-bamboo push handle pivots upward for service and folds down when not in use, allowing the trolley to maintain a compact footprint. Four original metal swivel casters complete the highly functional design. Hand-wrapped reed bindings, curved rattan supports, and carefully articulated joinery give the piece an unmistakably handcrafted quality.
Although no maker’s label remains, closely related three-bottle bamboo-and-rattan serving trolleys are documented as Italian designs from the 1960s. This example is therefore conservatively cataloged as attributed to Italy rather than assigned to a specific designer or workshop.
Equally compelling as a bar cart, aperitivo trolley, tea cart, coffee station, or occasional serving table, it brings the relaxed sophistication of a mid-century Mediterranean villa to a contemporary interior.
DESIGNER NOTES
This is the kind of hardworking vintage piece designers prize: compact, sculptural, materially rich, and useful well beyond its original purpose. The contrast between the dark organic bamboo framework and graphic hand-painted tile top gives it enough visual interest to anchor a room without overwhelming it.
Style it with crystal coupes and a silver cocktail shaker for a polished Palm Beach bar, with Italian glass and linen cocktail napkins for a Mediterranean aperitivo moment, or beside a reading chair with books and a small lamp. It would be equally at home in a French Riviera-inspired sunroom, collected Nancy Meyers kitchen, coastal dining room, covered veranda, or layered maximalist interior.

The trolley was kept in storage and appears to have seen minimal, if any, functional use. The bamboo-and-rattan framework remains sturdy, clean, and beautifully preserved. All four hand-painted ceramic tiles, the integrated three-bottle rack, lower slatted shelf, pivoting handle, wrapped joints, and four original casters are present and intact. The ceramic tiles show no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. Subtle glaze texture, speckling, small pinholes, and tonal variation are characteristics of the hand-painted ceramic finish rather than damage. Only extremely minor age-related finish rubbing, tiny contact marks, light patina to the casters, and slight localized dryness or fraying to portions of the reed wrapping are visible upon close inspection. No significant breaks, repairs, missing components, or structural concerns have been noted. Please review all photographs, which form an important part of the condition description. less
