A fine-quality antique marble-topped mahogany dressing table/lowboy.
This piece of antique furniture is 1st-class quality, and is suspected to be produced from Heal and Son, which by the end of the nineteenth century was one of the best-known furniture suppliers in London and for over a century has been known for promoting modern design and employing talented young designers. While the piece is attributed to Heal & Son, no maker’s mark or other definitive identifying documentation has been found to conclusively confirm its provenance. However, after extensive research, we have only ever seen one other nearly identical piece which was attributed to Heal and Son.
This piece has a bow-shaped marble top over two shaped flame mahogany drawers with boxwood banding and chequered inlaid edging, each having round brass ring pull handles. The base is constructed of solid oak with fine hand-cut dovetails. Below are two smaller drawers, with the frame being raised on finely tapering inlaid legs terminating on brass castors.
This antique dressing table/lowboy is in exceptional condition, having been constructed out of the finest timbers and suspected to be produced by one of the best cabinetmakers of its time.
Having been gently restored using traditional methods, the timbers have a lovely colour and patina, circa 1890.
