A richly colored still life by California artist Elsie Palmer Payne (1884–1971). Apples, pomegranates, pears, bananas, and grapes fill a woven basket and spill across a striped textile whose broad, earthy bands suggest a Mexican sarape. Payne sets the fruit’s warm reds and yellows against deep greens and a dark blue-green background.
Payne was an accomplished painter, illustrator, and teacher. She and her husband, noted California landscape painter Edgar Alwin Payne, were founding members of the Laguna Beach Art Association. In the 1930s, Elsie established an independent practice in Los Angeles and worked increasingly in oil, painting city scenes, portraits, flowers, and still lifes. A retrospective of her work was held at the Carnegie Art Museum in 1988.
Signed “Elsie Palmer Payne” at lower left. Dated circa 1930s .
