It is rare for us to offer a walnut chest for sale, but this little five drawer piece is so … Read more It is rare for us to offer a walnut chest for sale, but this little five drawer piece is so pretty that we could not resist. The top and sides are each made from bookmatched walnut boards. The top has nicely chamfered front corners and a thin ogee molding pinned to its underside gives it the appearance of greater thickness than the top alone. The case also has chamfered corners and a strip of ogee molding separates the two shallow top drawers from the three long drawers beneath. The drawers are oak with pine bottoms and are veneered on the inside. All the drawer fronts have a wafer-thin veneer of bookmatched burl walnut, as does the front of the case, including the baseboard and chamfered front corners. The drawers are trimmed with ogee walnut molding and are all delicately hand dovetailed. The zinc bail pulls on the top drawers are likely replacements whereas the zinc escutcheon plates are original. The second drawer has an original working lock and key.
The bad news is that the top bears some significant scratches, which we have tried to emphasize in the images provided. Almost invisible from some angles, no great effort has been made to disguise these. The top could be refinished but we have elected to reduce the price instead. See less
