A beautiful 19th-century English Victorian tea caddy, circa 1870, crafted in richly figured burr walnut and embellished with intricate geometric specimen-wood inlay.
The domed lid and façade showcase exceptional walnut figuring, accented by twin bands of finely patterned geometric inlay that continue from the front across the curved lid. An elaborate octagonal inlaid escutcheon surrounds the original-style keyhole, creating a particularly handsome focal point.
Opening the caddy reveals a fitted two-compartment interior retaining both removable wooden tea lids with turned finials. The underside of the lid is finished with wonderfully decorative gathered red velvet, adding an unexpected richness to the interior.
The exterior has been recently French polished, bringing out the remarkable depth and movement of the burr walnut while preserving the character expected of a piece approaching 160 years old.
A striking decorative object as well as a wonderful example of Victorian cabinetmaking, this caddy would be beautiful displayed on a console, library table, bar, desk, or incorporated into a collection of antique boxes.
