A dramatic late-20th-century American ceramic vase by Harris Potteries of Chicago, retaining its original “Made in USA” maker’s label.
Standing approximately 16 inches tall, the vase has a commanding architectural silhouette with a tapered ovoid body, compact neck, and broad rolled rim. Its high-gloss black glaze provides a striking ground for sweeping dimensional relief decoration finished in layered tones of pewter, gunmetal, charcoal, and smoky blue-gray. The sculptural motif suggests stylized plumes, flames, waves, or unfurling leaves, creating movement across the body and changing character as light travels over the reflective surface.
The combination of glossy black, metallic coloration, and exaggerated relief places the design comfortably within the Art Deco Revival and Postmodern vocabulary of the late 20th century. Comparable labeled Harris Potteries decorative wares are frequently attributed to the 1980s; because no factory catalog or model documentation for this particular vase has been located, it is conservatively identified as late 20th century, likely 1980s.
Harris Potteries was an established American commercial ceramics manufacturer whose family history in the pottery business dates to 1959. The company later produced ceramics at considerable scale for major American retailers. This vase represents the more sculptural and design-conscious side of its decorative production, with a substantial form, clean high-gloss glaze, glazed interior, dimensional surface treatment, and beautifully preserved original label.
A distinctive statement piece for a console, pedestal, mantel, dining room sideboard, or generously scaled bookcase. It is substantial enough to stand alone as sculpture and may also be displayed with tall branches or dried botanicals.
DESIGNER NOTES
This vase has the bold visual presence designers look for when finishing an Art Deco Revival, Postmodern, Hollywood Regency, Contemporary, or Maximalist interior.
Its reflective black glaze and pewter-toned relief would be particularly striking against lacquered cabinetry, burl wood, travertine, marble, smoked glass, chrome, polished nickel, or aged brass. Style it alone beneath a picture light, place it at one end of a console for an asymmetric composition, or pair it with a smaller metallic object to emphasize its sculptural scale.
Although dramatic, the monochromatic palette keeps it sophisticated and versatile. The design reads as glamorous rather than ornate—equally effective in a dark, moody room or as a high-contrast accent in a pale neutral interior.

No chips, cracks, breaks, or repairs were observed. The broad rim and dimensional relief decoration remain intact, and the high-gloss glaze retains a beautiful reflective finish. One localized area has a few superficial surface scratches caused by the vase rubbing against another object. These marks are cosmetic, are most noticeable under direct light or close inspection, and do not detract from the vase’s overall presentation. The underside shows normal age-related rubbing and discoloration and retains three protective felt pads, along with a small remnant from an earlier paper inventory or price label. The original Harris Potteries maker’s label remains intact and clearly legible. Please review all photographs, including the detailed condition images. less
