An exceptional 48-piece antique porcelain dinnerware service by Haviland & Co. of Limoges, France, retailed by the prestigious Boston firm Abram French & Co.
The service features intricate cobalt-blue transfer-printed decoration inspired by East Asian porcelain, with flowering branches, birds, stylized landscapes, and central botanical medallions set against luminous white porcelain. Fine gold rims lend a formal finish, while the pierced handled serving pieces are embellished with elaborate gilt detailing—an especially distinctive feature of the collection.
This coordinated service includes an assortment of dinnerware and specialty serving pieces, including plates, shallow bowls, cups and saucers, an open serving bowl, an oval serving platter, and ornate pierced handled dishes. The large platter features a softly scalloped outline surrounding a central medallion of birds, flowers, and foliage.
Period backstamps include “Abram French & Co., Boston / Haviland & Co., Limoges,” together with Haviland & Co. Limoges factory and decorator marks. Abram French & Co. was a prominent Boston importer and retailer of fine European porcelain, glass, and decorative wares.
Dating to the late 19th century, the service reflects the period’s fascination with Japonisme and Asian decorative arts. Its extensive composition, richly detailed blue-and-white decoration, and uncommon specialty serving pieces make it an impressive collection for formal entertaining or display.
DESIGNER NOTES
This is the kind of dinnerware that gives a room its story. The classic blue-and-white palette, delicate gilt accents, and collected assortment of serving pieces feel especially at home in a Nancy Meyers-inspired kitchen or dining room—layered, welcoming, quietly elegant, and intended to be enjoyed rather than kept out of sight.
Display the service in a glass-front cabinet, open hutch, or English pine dresser, where its cobalt decoration can become part of the room. For entertaining, pair it with crisp white linen, warm brass candlesticks, woven chargers, silver serving pieces, or softly patterned textiles.
The combination of traditional Limoges porcelain and Asian-inspired botanical imagery makes the service a natural fit for chinoiserie, grandmillennial, English country, and traditional maximalist interiors. The ornate pierced serving dishes are particularly striking and may also be displayed individually on plate stands when the complete service is not in use.
Formal enough for a holiday table yet charming and approachable enough for everyday display, this is a wonderfully versatile collection for creating the relaxed, beautifully layered atmosphere associated with a Nancy Meyers interior.
