The expansive composition depicts an elaborate traditional Chinese court and garden scene, with architectural pavilions, figures in period dress, terraces, trees, rock formations, vessels, and decorative objects rendered in warm gilt, bronze, and softly aged metallic tones.
The carved decoration creates beautiful depth and texture across the lacquered surface, while ornate scrolling borders frame the continuous narrative scene. Individual decorative objects and antiquities appear along the lower panels, completing the highly detailed composition.
Coromandel screens are celebrated for their labor-intensive lacquer technique, in which imagery is carved or incised into layered lacquer and subsequently detailed to create contrasting color, texture, and dimension.
With its large scale and dramatic black-and-gold palette, this screen makes an exceptional statement as a room divider, freestanding work of decorative art, or architectural backdrop behind a sofa, console, dining table, or bed.
