This is an original 1805 hand-colored copper engraving from Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s (1747–1822) Bilderbuch für Kinder. It is newly matted in muted gray-green conservation matboard using archival techniques, sized to fit a standard 11 × 14 in. frame.
Bilderbuch für Kinder was one of the most ambitious illustrated educational projects of its era, eventually spanning twelve volumes and 1,185 colored copperplates. Bertuch used images as a primary way for young readers to encounter natural history, geography, technology, and the wider world.
Roses were a subject Bertuch pursued well beyond a single plate. An extraordinary 1804 portfolio associated with his Weimar collection preserves fifty original watercolor studies of roses and rose hips. Published the following year, Rosen XV belongs to that same period of sustained botanical interest, giving this engraving a particularly appealing connection to Bertuch’s own engagement with the subject.
