An 18th century Liégeois commode that brings neoclassical refinement to the warmth and utility of Country French furniture. Crafted in the Liège region, its broad top and three generous drawers give it the proportions of a substantial household chest. The Louis XVI influence is expressed in its balanced façade, hand-carved garlands and ribbons, and fluted tapered legs.
Such chests of drawers were considered essential to almost any room, providing storage and easy access plus a convenient decorating surface.
Brass drawer pulls and keyhole escutcheons enrich the carving and complete the carefully ordered design. Its stripped finish reveals the character of the wood and gives this antique commode a quiet beauty that has endured for more than two centuries.
