A truly special antique walnut chest on chest featuring beautiful figured wood, decorative inlay, carved detailing, and an unusual raised upper section that gives the piece remarkable architectural presence.

Dating to approximately the late 19th century, this handsome chest combines traditional craftsmanship with the decorative influence of the late Victorian and Aesthetic periods.

The upper section is particularly striking. A narrow top drawer features a contrasting foliate and geometric inlay motif, while the lower portion is divided into two beautifully framed small compartments accented by round hardware and an elaborate carved central ornament. Delicate beaded detailing further defines the architecture of the upper case.

Below, a projecting walnut surface separates the upper section from two generously sized drawers, creating the distinctive chest-on-chest silhouette.

The lower case features beautifully figured walnut drawer fronts, understated round hardware, a shaped apron, and wonderfully decorative turned front feet.

The combination of warm walnut, contrasting inlay, carved ornament and unusual proportions makes this much more than a utilitarian antique chest. It has the sculptural quality of a piece intended to be noticed.

At 40 inches wide, the chest provides substantial storage while remaining relatively compact. Its 49-inch height also makes it an excellent statement piece for spaces where a traditional long dresser would be too large.
