Early 19th Century 1824 dated English Needlework Sampler by Ann Yates, Aged 12, Ravenhead
A wonderfully characterful early 19th-century English needlework sampler, worked by Ann Yates, aged 12 years, of Ravenhead, in coloured threads upon a coarse linen ground. The upper section is worked with alphabets in several styles and sizes, divided by decorative stitched borders, followed by a moral verse concerned with virtue, health and the fleeting nature of worldly riches The lower field is particularly charming, filled with naïve pictorial motifs including birds, flowering plants, stylised trees, a basket of flowers, a sailing ship and small geometric devices, all surrounding the maker's cartouche inscribed: Ann Yates Aged 12 Years 1824 Ravenhead
The principal verse appears to read, allowing for the charming irregularities of the young needleworker: “Wish not for beauty nor languish for wealth, But grant me kind Providence virtue and health. Then richer than kings and more happy than they, My days shall pass sweetly and swiftly away.” A delightful piece of Georgian schoolgirl needlework, retaining the wonderfully naïve character, muted colours and natural ageing expected of a sampler approaching two centuries old. Presented behind glass in a later simple moulded wooden frame.
Condition wise the piece is heavily distressed as you would expect from a 202 year old piece, the fact that it remains is a marvel, that said, compared to many samplers of seen of this period, this is in very good form Dimensions Height: 29cm Width: 23cm Depth: 1.5cm
Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
