Set of four large Christmas ornaments, attributed to Central European manufacture and dating from circa the 1950s, crafted from exceptionally thin hollow glass and individually hand-painted with four different narrative Christmas scenes.

Identical in scale and construction yet individually decorated, the four ornaments were conceived as a coherent group. Rather than repeating a single motif, each sphere carries its own composition, extending around the curved surface and revealing further details as the ornament is turned.

One ornament, distinguished by its intense blue ground, depicts a richly decorated Christmas tree surrounded by presents. A second is devoted to Father Christmas, with figures carrying toys and gifts accompanied by a decorated tree and a small reindeer. The third presents a snowy outdoor landscape with children, a sled, a small orange dog, evergreen trees and a house in the distance. The fourth depicts an intimate Christmas interior, with a teddy bear seated in a pink striped armchair beside a decorated tree and surrounded by presents and festive details.

Throughout the set, the hand-painted execution remains clearly visible. Fine brushstrokes alternate with broader, more transparent passages of pigment, while subtle variations in line, colour and density give each scene its individual character.

The physical construction is particularly distinctive. Despite their generous dimensions, the four ornaments weigh only approximately 200 grams in total. The hollow glass walls are remarkably thin and become softly translucent when crossed by natural light. In sunlight, lighter areas of pigment allow the glass to glow through, while denser brushwork remains more opaque, creating an almost watercolour-like luminosity.

Each sphere is finished at both poles with a pierced, flower-shaped silver-tone metal rosette. The upper fitting incorporates the hanging loop and cord, while a corresponding rosette surrounds the lower opening. These double fittings are an unusual and characteristic construction detail and retain the natural patina and oxidation associated with age.

Together, the four ornaments form a remarkably cohesive decorative ensemble: four individual miniature Christmas narratives united by their scale, delicate glass construction, painterly treatment and distinctive metal fittings.
