The stylized bird was … Read more A charming and finely crafted Italian Murano art glass duck sculpture, dating from approximately the 1970s. The stylized bird was entirely shaped by hand and displays an especially refined combination of traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques. Its transparent body is enriched with shimmering gold leaf inclusions and rows of carefully controlled air bubbles, known as the bullicante technique. Delicately modeled wings and an elongated clear glass tail enhance its elegant, streamlined silhouette. The sculptural head is formed from contrasting black and clear glass, while the long black beak provides a striking graphic accent. A substantial outer layer of clear glass gives the figure remarkable depth and creates beautiful reflections as the viewing angle and surrounding light change. The sophisticated use of gold leaf, controlled bubbles and layered glass closely relates this piece to the celebrated Murano animal sculptures produced by workshops such as Alfredo Barbini and Seguso Vetri d’Arte. As the sculpture is unsigned, no definitive maker attribution is being made. Despite its relatively compact proportions, the duck has a strong decorative presence and works beautifully as a cabinet object, desk sculpture or elegant addition to a collection of Italian Mid-Century Modern glass.
