The Rock Box, designed by Studio Job in 2002 and cast in solid bronze in 2013, is a striking sculptural object that merges humor with monumentality. Weighing an impressive 12 kilograms, this black-patinated bronze box is both a container and a statement piece, a “rock box for cookies,” as Job Smeets once described it with characteristic wit. Its jagged, faceted form resembles a geological fragment, suggesting the timelessness of natural stone yet betraying its man-made precision and conceptual depth. The Rock Box belongs to a limited edition of 25 pieces plus artist proofs, it is signed and dated 2013. Cast entirely in bronze and finished with a deep, dark patina, it exemplifies Studio Job’s mastery of traditional craft combined with a contemporary sculptural sensibility. The surface, with its crystalline geometry, absorbs and reflects light in equal measure, giving the piece an almost volcanic energy. It comes with its original wooden crate made by Studio Job.
Founded in 2000 by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel, Studio Job has become one of the most influential forces in contemporary design, known for its blend of fine art, craftsmanship, and symbolic storytelling. Their work spans furniture, sculpture, and architecture, often challenging the boundaries between utility and art. Studio Job’s creations are held in numerous museum collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands. In the Rock Box, Studio Job compresses the essence of their practice: irony meets craftsmanship, and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. It is at once a functional object and a sculptural meditation on weight, materiality, and the absurd, a true contemporary relic that bridges art and design.
