a pair of rare art deco bookends by eckhardt & engler from 1935. Two sculpted dachshunds brace their front paws against the strictly geometric bookends. The slightly iridescent glaze lends the minimalist form a special depth and underscores the contrast between figurative representation and clear geometry characteristic of the period.

the bookends bear the eckhardt & engler factory mark with the addition of "germany" and the mold number 3701. The dating can be documented with unusual precision: a pair of the same design and with the identical mold number is in the collection of the museum kurhaus kleve and is dated there to 1935 (inventory no. 2022-i-230).

a characteristic design of german art deco ceramics, whose date of origin and mold number are clearly documented by a comparable museum piece.
