This exceptionally elegant Louis XVI-style occasional table, in the manner of Adam Weisweiler, combines the restrained architecture of late eighteenth-century French neoclassicism with an extraordinary richness of gilt-bronze ornament. Its refined circular form, slender ebonized supports, extensive bronze mounts, and dramatic black variegated marble top with contrasting white veining recall the sophisticated small-scale furniture associated with Weisweiler and the finest Parisian ébénistes of the Louis XVI period.
The table is surmounted by a substantial circular black marble top, beautifully variegated with irregular veins and passages of white, pale gray, and cream. The natural movement of the stone provides a dramatic contrast to the precise symmetry of the frame beneath. A broad gilt-bronze molding encircles the marble, giving the top a crisp, jewel-like definition.
Immediately below is an exceptionally decorative frieze. Against a dark ebonized ground runs a continuous band of finely modeled gilt-bronze flowering foliage, leaves, berries, and scrolling garlands. The brilliance of the gilded ornament against the black background creates the luxurious contrast so characteristic of sophisticated French neoclassical furniture. At intervals, the floral frieze is interrupted by prominent rectangular mounts incorporating classical female masks or heads, lending the table an archaeological, antique-inspired character.
The top is supported by tall, slender ebonized columnar legs, each extensively decorated with spiraling gilt-bronze vines. These delicate leafy trails wind around the dark shafts almost like climbing plants around architectural columns. Gilt-bronze collars, capitals, and molded rings further articulate the supports. Below the dark upper shafts, the legs transition into elegant gilt-bronze lower sections terminating in beautifully modeled animal-paw feet, giving the otherwise delicate table a distinctly sculptural quality.
A particularly handsome feature is the elaborate lower stretcher. Gracefully curved gilt-bronze members sweep inward from the legs toward a circular central medallion. Within this roundel is a raised floral or botanical ornament, creating a decorative focal point beneath the table while also visually uniting the slender supports.
The association with Adam Weisweiler (c. 1744–1820) is stylistically appropriate. A German-born cabinetmaker who established himself in Paris, Weisweiler became one of the outstanding ébénistes of the late Louis XVI period. He was admitted as a maître ébéniste in 1778 and became renowned for exceptionally refined furniture combining disciplined neoclassical forms with costly materials and finely cast gilt-bronze mounts. His clientele reached the highest levels of European society, and his furniture was frequently supplied through the celebrated marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre.
Weisweiler's work is particularly recognizable for its slender architectural supports, contrasting dark surfaces, elaborate ormolu mounts, classical ornament, sophisticated stretchers, and jewel-like precision. Rather than copying one specific documented model, this table draws upon that distinctive decorative vocabulary.
The result is a remarkably handsome occasional table: the black-and-white variegated marble, ebonized surfaces, spiraling foliate mounts, classical masks, extensive gilt bronze, delicate stretcher, and sculptural feet create an object that is simultaneously architectural and luxurious. It is best described as a Louis XVI-style gilt-bronze-mounted occasional table in the manner of Adam Weisweiler, possessing the refined proportions and lavish bronze decoration associated with one of the great names of French neoclassical cabinetmaking.
