Created for Adalbert Schnizlein’s systematic atlas of plant families, this original antique maple lithograph with hand colored details was intended to explain how plants could be identified and classified. Its enlarged flowers, reproductive structures, and paired winged seeds reveal the features nineteenth-century botanists studied to distinguish the maple group.
