Finely modeled Japanese Meiji-period patinated bronze okimono, circa 1890–1910, depicting a seated man enjoying a traditional kiseru pipe while resting cross-legged upon a bound bale of rice straw.
The compact sculpture is exceptionally detailed, from the expressive face, swept-back hair, layered garments, hands and bare feet to the beautifully rendered woven straw and rope bindings. A small tobacco pouch rests at his side.
The bronze bears a cast four-character artist's cartouche 嶋光之作, catalogued as Toko, also rendered Shimamitsu, essentially translating as “made by Toko.” The same signature has been documented on other Meiji-period bronze work by a Japanese metalwork specialist through BADA.
An apparently identical casting of this seated smoker model has also been documented as a Meiji-period bronze.
A charming and highly decorative example of the naturalistic genre sculpture for which Japanese Meiji metalworkers became celebrated.
Japan, Meiji period, circa 1890–1910.
Signed: Toko / Shimamitsu, 嶋光之作
