Approximately 28 3/4" High x 15" Diameter.

A finely decorated late 19th-century British satinwood lady's sewing or work table in the Sheraton Revival taste, circa 1880–1900.

This elegant and unusually compact table features a circular drum-form workbox raised on four slender square tapering legs joined by a shaped lower stretcher/under tier.

The hinged top is richly hand-painted with a figural scene of putti/cherubs surrounded by delicate floral decoration.

The frieze/body is further embellished with ribbon-tied floral swags and a painted female portrait medallion, with additional floral decoration extending onto the legs and lower stretcher.

Fine dark line detailing provides contrast against the warm satinwood ground.

The lid opens to reveal the original removable fitted wooden sewing tray with multiple compartments.

The textile/silk sewing fittings or liners that would originally have occupied portions of the fitted interior are no longer present.

The original brass inset two-lever lock remains in place and is stamped “SECURE / 2 / LEVER,” together with a partially legible maker's/trademark stamp. The key is not present.

The table closely relates in form, proportions and construction to other documented late Victorian painted satinwood sewing tables of circa 1900, including examples with the same tall, narrow proportions, four square tapering legs, shaped lower stretcher and fitted sewing interior. The cabinetmaker has not been identified, and no maker attribution is claimed.

Great antique condition consistent with age and use. The original textile/silk fittings or liners are missing. Key is not present. There is visible age-related craquelure and surface wear to the painted decoration, together with shrinkage/separation cracking, including a noticeable crack through a decorated area of the body, and evidence of old repairs/restoration and reinforcement to the underside. Please review photographs carefully for condition. These age-related characteristics have been taken into consideration in the pricing and are part of the table's history and character. See less
