This unusual octagonal tin features colorful narrative scenes inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha, including the prominently titled “Hiawatha’s Wedding Journey” scene.

The exterior is richly decorated with period imagery, geometric borders and Native American-inspired motifs, with additional illustrated scenes and story text continuing around the sides. An original hinged metal carrying handle completes the distinctive design.

A wonderful example of early American advertising and packaging, the tin has considerable decorative appeal as an Americana collectible or vintage home accent. Display it on a kitchen shelf, bookcase, tabletop or among a collection of antique advertising tins.

The tin retains an appealing aged surface with visible crazing to the lithographed finish, scratches, edge wear, small areas of paint/lithograph loss, oxidation and other age-related imperfections. These signs of use are consistent with its vintage age and are clearly visible in the photographs. The original handle remains present.
