Mid-Century French Jacquard Tapestry – Life of the Seigneurial Court A charming mid-20th-century French woven tapestry, produced on a Jacquard … Read more Mid-Century French Jacquard Tapestry – Life of the Seigneurial Court A charming mid-20th-century French woven tapestry, produced on a Jacquard loom in wool and cotton, depicting an idyllic aristocratic garden scene inspired by the celebrated “Life of the Seigneurial” (Vie Seigneuriale) tapestries of the early 16th century. The composition shows elegantly dressed ladies and a gentleman strolling through a flowering garden, surrounded by birds, trees, flowering plants and small animals, with fantastical châteaux in the background. The richly patterned floral setting is characteristic of the millefleurs tradition, in which numerous botanical motifs create the impression of a luxuriant medieval garden or orchard. The original Vie Seigneuriale series, created around the beginning of the 1500s, portrays the refined leisure and everyday activities of the aristocracy: promenades, music, reading, embroidery, hunting and the enjoyment of gardens. This later tapestry beautifully evokes that medieval/Renaissance courtly atmosphere while reflecting the decorative tapestry revival of the mid-20th century. See less
