Each chair is built in a strict cubic form, with wide flat arms and a low, deep seat set within a rectangular frame. The outer arm panels and backrest are veneered in figured burl walnut, book-matched and set within a banded border of straight-grained wood, raised on a plinth-form base. Construction follows the period's veneer-over-lightweight-frame method, keeping the chairs notably light for their bulk. Seat and back cushions are upholstered in a later black-and-white checked fabric with piped edges, a practical reupholstery that leaves the original form and proportions untouched.

The geometric massing and burl paneling place these firmly within European Art Deco cabinetmaking, sitting comfortably alongside Scandinavian and Central European interiors of the same period. Deep, low-slung proportions give a grounded, architectural presence well suited to a library or study. A well-proportioned pair with strong original form. See less
