Rendered with soft, naturalistic color and fine detail, the intimate composition captures the quiet relationship between mare and foal against a leafy rural landscape.

Baldwin specialized in animal art and portraiture, with horses and dogs among her recurring subjects. She also worked in the decorative arts, designing for porcelain, English enamel boxes, textiles, and wallpaper. Other Baldwin works in the June Hastings collection include equestrian and wildlife subjects.
