The tapered, stave-built body widens toward the mouth and is reinforced with encircling metal bands. An arched metal carrying handle with a turned wooden grip completes its practical construction. The underlying bucket predates the decorative treatment.

Against the black ground, gold-toned lettering with red accents names “Edmund Heap,” above the flowing script “Fishmonger” and a reference to “Billingsgate Market.” A large painted fish extends around the lower body, its fins, scales, and facial features articulated in fine lines. The combination of bold lettering, ornamental flourishes, and a readily recognizable trade emblem gives the decoration the character of traditional British commercial sign painting.

The later decoration transforms a utilitarian vessel into a distinctive piece of decorative trade ware. Its reference to London’s Billingsgate fish market supplies the subject.
