The rectangular exterior is organized by fine brass stringing, repeated fleur-de-lis motifs, small quatrefoils, and scrolling circular ornaments. An elongated, pierced-outline brass cartouche centers the lid and bears the engraved name “C. R. Fish.” Corresponding decoration extends across the front, while recessed brass carrying handles preserve the compact profile of the closed case.

The hinged box unfolds to provide a generous writing surface formed by two purple leather-covered panels with elaborate gilt foliate borders. Brass-inlaid wooden surrounds continue the exterior ornament into the interior, an especially considered feature of the design. A compartmented accessory section incorporates covered storage with small turned pulls and recesses for writing supplies, arranging the practical components around the principal writing area.

A further fitted section combines a rectangular mirror with an intricate arrangement of narrow and rectangular compartments, circular receptacles, and red leather fittings, including a folding implement holder. These features identify the object as a combined writing and dressing case, intended to organize correspondence materials and personal accessories within a single portable cabinet.
