Possibly intended as a tabletop match holder, the piece combines a sculptural animal-form cover with a cylindrical lower compartment. Its weighted base provides stability, allowing the projecting head and elongated neck to stand securely upright.

The well-sculpted head depicts a roaring lion with pronounced brows, rounded eyes, an extended muzzle, and an open mouth exposing curved canine teeth. Incised whiskers animate the smoother facial planes, while the mane is articulated in overlapping, flame-like locks enriched with fine linear detail. The contrast between the deeply modeled mane and the broad surfaces of the face gives the head considerable presence from both frontal and profile views. Surviving traces of gilding introduce warm accents against the dark patinated surface.

The head and neck lift off at the circular collar to reveal the storage compartment within the base. A projecting inner sleeve guides the cover into position, integrating the functional opening into the sculptural design. Its form and construction are consistent with a decorative match container, although this identification remains tentative without a documented counterpart or clearly identifiable striking surface.
