The cabinet has been carefully and expertly stripped, revealing the natural character of the oak while preserving the depth and definition of its elaborate ornamentation.
The upper cabinet features its original beveled glass door within an arched frame, opening to a paneled interior fitted with shelves for books, collectibles or treasured objects. Turned and fluted columns rise along either side, joined by carved scrollwork and a deeply molded crown. The pierced crest is centered with a commanding lion’s head medallion surrounded by scrolling foliage, while classical finials complete the upper silhouette.
Below, a wide drawer is enriched with a continuous carved foliate border. The lower cabinet door presents the most remarkable feature: a deeply carved oval hunting scene depicting game birds amid dense leaves and woodland vegetation. Individual feathers, branches and foliage are rendered with extraordinary precision, giving the composition remarkable dimension and movement. Additional carved leaves fill the corners, while turned columns, paneled sides and broad bun feet complete the stately architectural form.
Hunt cabinets became important furnishings in the grand dining rooms and libraries of 19th century France, where their abundant oak carving celebrated the traditions of the hunt, the countryside and the generous table. This cabinet is an especially accomplished example, combining impressive scale, masterful carving and useful storage with the lighter appearance of beautifully stripped oak.
