Exceptional large antique gilt-metal jewelry or dresser casket, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1920.
This unusually elaborate casket features a graceful shaped form richly decorated with intricate pierced, embossed and dimensional floral and foliate ornamentation. Sweeping Rococo Revival scrollwork surrounds raised flowers and foliage, while multiple decorative registers incorporate beading, repeating leaves and finely patterned borders.
The attention to detail is remarkable. Even the upper rim, largely concealed when the lid is closed, is embellished with its own repeating foliate decoration.
The hinged lid holds a substantial piece of thick beveled glass, specially shaped to follow the contours of the casket and fitted within an ornate metal surround. Traditional multi-part construction is visible throughout, with formed and mechanically joined decorative sections, a substantial barrel hinge, floral hinge detailing, an elaborate ornamental clasp and separately applied decorative feet.
The interior and fitted underside are lined in warm golden velvet.
Measurements: Approximately 8" wide × 4½" deep at the body × 3½" high to the top of the beveled-glass lid. Overall depth is nearly 5½" including the projecting front clasp.
Excellent antique condition. The beveled glass is intact and beautiful, the casket sits level, and the hinged lid operates properly. The elaborate metalwork and velvet lining are beautifully preserved. Appropriate age-related patina, oxidation and finish variation are present and contribute to its antique character. Please review photographs for condition and detail.
No maker or country-of-origin mark has been located. The design reflects the elaborate Rococo Revival and Belle Époque decorative traditions popular around the turn of the 20th century.
A striking and unusually detailed antique casket for jewelry, keepsakes, a vanity or dressing table, or simply as a decorative display piece.
