A rare english creamware masonic jug, made in staffordshire during the george iii period, circa 1810. Standing 12.4 cm high, it has a rounded body, a high neck, a shaped spout and a loop handle with finger-rest.
the jug is printed in black on both sides. Its armorial panel incorporates the three-castle shield of the masons' company of london, the columns jachin and boaz with globes, a master architect, a beehive and celestial emblems. The lower ribbon reads "sit lux et lux fuit". The other panel presents the full seven-line masonic consecration anthem beginning "hail! masonry divine!", within a floral surround with working tools, the all-seeing eye and the blazing star marked "g".
the underside is unmarked and retains an old collection label, "148".
condition
in ideal condition, without cracks, chips, repairs, restoration or repainting. Uv examination found no hidden issues. The glaze has only an even age-related crazing. This level of preservation is highly significant for a creamware jug over 200 years old: all closely comparable masonic examples found during research had cracks or other structural damage.
