Charming pair of late 19th-century French brass push-up candlesticks, dating to circa 1880–1900.
Each candlestick features a slender cylindrical stem rising from a stepped circular base and terminating in a gently flared candle cup. A vertical opening along the stem retains the characteristic sliding brass thumb piece traditionally used to raise the candle as it burned down.
This ingenious push-up mechanism was commonly found on practical domestic candlesticks during the 19th century and gives this matching pair both decorative charm and historical interest.
The restrained design, with its simple architectural proportions and warm brass surface, makes the pair particularly versatile for display on a mantel, dining table, console or bookshelf.
Both candlesticks retain their brass push buttons. The internal mechanisms have not been tested for functionality and the pair is therefore offered primarily as decorative antique candlesticks.
The brass shows attractive age-related patina, minor surface scratches, small marks and areas of oxidation consistent with more than a century of use. Some verdigris is visible within the candle sockets and push-up openings. We have intentionally preserved the aged surface rather than aggressively polishing the brass.
